Serious diseases linked to dental disorders: Dentists.

PESHAWAR:may 9: Stressing the need for oral hygiene by properly taking care of mouth and teeth, leading dental surgeons Thursday said most of serious diseases were linked to dental disorders.

Dental experts including Prof Dr Shaheed Iqbal, Principal Sardar Begum Dental College and Hospital (SBDCH), Associate Prof Dr Tahir Ali Khan and Dr Munir Gohar said proper dental care could keep people away from becoming victim of risky diseases like cancer, heart failure and stomach disorders.

Speaking at a programme held in connection with ‘Dental Care Awareness Week’ organised by the SBDCH on the college premises in Peshawar’s posh University Town, Gandhara University Vice Chancellor Yar Muhammad Khan (Sitara-e-Imtiaz) inaugurated the weeklong awareness programme where patients would be given free treatment.

He said the university had expanded its outreach activities, especially in the field of community dentistry to create awareness among people in less developed remote areas of the province about the dentistry-related diseases, their prevention and treatment.

He said the awareness week would continue through May 12 on the campus. Yar Khan said SBDCH was component of Gandhara University. Prof Dr Shaheed and his colleagues told media persons that SBDC had already organised a number of free dental camps in remote areas of Kohat, Hazara region and Nowshera to create awareness about dental diseases.

Founder of the university and noted surgeon late Dr Muhammad Kabir also wanted provision of free health facilities to the people of remote under developed areas of the province, they added.

Shaheed disclosed that SBDC was the only medical institute in the private sector, which had state-of-the-art laboratories, latest medical equipment and highly qualified teaching staff, offering the best possible treatment facilities to the patients.

About the most common dental disease, he said most of the people in Pakistan suffer from dental decay and gums disease and both had multiple causes like dental plaque, bad oral hygiene, diet, sugar and sweets intake, etc. Yar Muhammad said they would introduce three more faculties in the varsity including Social Sciences, Basic Sciences and Humanity.
